R&B SENSATION, "Nikki" has had her new album, "Evolution", nominated for a best produced album award! I've got the album on heavy rotation in my car and it ROCKS!!!

Our words weren't even cold as we lamented the complete absence of Coloured artists from the MetroFM awards lineup, particularly in the hip-hop category, when we get wind of the nomination of Nikki's new album, "Evolution" in the best produced album category.

Produced by Lindsey Arends of Black-Note Entertainment, Nikki's album signals a return to the heart and soul of R&B. With some catchy house tracks from her EP included on the Evolution album, Nikki's talents come shining through in this latest release.

When Suburban Menace decided to bring the Northern Suburbs of da Mutha City a taste of what they’ve been up to lately, they partnered with  Rhythm & Blues Lounge in Sarepta, Kuils River to bring you…….. R & B hosts Hip Hop Vol. II.

Suburban Menace are, as you know from previous articles, quite busy lately, and not only in the studio, but also live on stage. (This interesting article from Racialicious.com, the American blog on race and popular culture explores race, the West and modern-day discrimination in a very interesting way...kinda makes me wish that South Africa was equally as expressive and committed to true open dialogue like we should be - Ed

I just finished reading Sherene H. Razack’s Casting Out: The Eviction of Muslims from Western Law & Politics (2008). And I gotta say, it blew me onto my ass.

Razack is the author of several books, including Looking White People in the Eye: Gender, Race, and Culture in Courtrooms and Classrooms, and her work in race theory definitely shows in Casting Out. She uses plenty of theory and excellent cross-racial examples to illustrate that what’s currently happening to Muslims in the West (racialization that results in “the expulsion of Muslims from the political community, a process that takes the form of stigmatization, surveillance, incarceration, torture, and bombing”) has happened to other groups before.

The debate about being a coloured in South Africa has been debated to wits end, by whites, blacks, Indians, coloureds and hell, even when I hear those Chinese speaking I swear they are also talking about coloureds. I don’t know about you but I do like it when people talk about me, only thing is, they keep on the stereotypes that they think I subscribe to instead of wanting to meet me, as a person. And the questions about our people, culture and being still persist.

(Sometimes, a news story is so far out of the ordinary that you wonder what kind of person would do such a thing. Well, this news report which surfaced recently had us eliminating any chances that the guy involved was a bruin-ou...read on for the reasons why we say the hero of this story couldn't possibly be a bruin-ou - Ed ;-) )

HIV/AIDS: Zero Tolerance or Zero-grazing? (Differences in approach between SA and Uganda)

(A few months back, someone on BO asked about the responses to the AIDS pandemic in South Africa and how they compared to the success experienced by Uganda in responding to and dramatically decreasing the spread of AIDS…so this article is a reflection on history but I think it raises some interesting issues about sex, culture and religion in SA even today especially with December 1st around the corner again - Tessie)

As the HIV/AIDS prevalence in South Africa is on the increase it is a disease that is undoubtedly unavoidable by the nation, its communities and the individuals that inhabit its demographic, social and cultural space. Being the country that hosts the most people living with HIV/AIDS, it seems fair to say that all South Africans fall into one of two categories; either those infected with HIV/AIDS or alternately those affected by the disease. One cannot live on the Southern tip of Africa and lay claim be being neither one.
