(We found this opinion piece from News24 moderately entertaining, largely ignorant but worthy of publishing here...enjoy )

I am fairly dark-skinned with dark hair and have often been mistaken for being Portuguese, Greek, Italian and Israeli (but mostly Portuguese). I am actually half-German and half-Afrikaans.

So when I told friends at the office that I had once also been mistaken for being coloured, they all burst out laughing.

I was deeply and profoundly offended. So they took pity on me, and a few of my coloured co-workers began introducing me to the complex and evolved life of the Cape coloured. (I was told if you want to be coloured, you have to be from Cape Town).

Apparently coloured people from Joburg don't really qualify. Sorry.

(This article from Cape Argus - It seems that Bruin-ou.com just does'nt make the grade or we're not Brown enough for these ouens...cos we never got invited - too bad though! :-(

A new organisation aimed at uniting coloured people is adamant it does not want to launch a political party, but some commentators say it would be difficult for the body not to be regarded as one.

Weekend Argus reported that Die Bruin Belange Inisiatief (the coloured interests initiative) would host its first conference at Goudini Spa in mid-July.

Bos Willemse, one of the movement's founders, said on Sunday that the organisation was not political but aimed at uniting coloured people.

Fair is lovely and black is ugly. That's how most Indians around the world feel. Indian women still seek out "miracle creams" to brighten, lighten or whiten their complexion in the belief that fair women are more beautiful.

Durban sociologist Ashwin Desai said Indians need to stop obsessing over skin colour.

"South Africa is an incredible country. Last week the Chinese were declared blacks. When Indians apply for a job, they want to be black to benefit from affirmative action. But an overwhelming number really want to be white," Desai said.

A few years ago, a researcher by the name of Tanja Bosch decided to do an ethnography on Bruin-ou.com. Seeing as Bruin-ou.com was pretty much the only Coloured-centric website operating at the time, Bruin-ou.com was seen as representing a qualitative microcosm of the Coloured community at large, providing for a rich insight into the general community's sentiment.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that bruin-ous have completely stopped making hip-hop music. Heck, I can’t even remember when the last time was that a bruin-ou artist was nominated for a SAMA award in the hip-hop category, or when a mainstream radio station actually played a few tracks from some up and coming bruin-ou hip-hop artist’s album (of which there are MANY!!!). It’s like a jungle out there for hip-hop heads.

“For Generations”, an exciting new theater production, written, produced and performed by veteran actor and media personality Kurt Egelhof. The play will run at The Grahamstown Festival between the 26th June and the 5 July. Tickets are available from Computicket.

Kurt Egelhof says, “The play was written in response to a challenge facing modern fathers: raising their sons in a so-called free and fair South Africa, where role modeling has become a serious problem. If our youth do not have good private role models to look up to, what are their chances of becoming good human beings if they are to look to the public arena for their role models?”

Fresh new hip-hop crew, The Adikx, is made up of artists Foul-Play aka F-P Montana; Cloneproof (Rah & O-Beatz); Zephyr and DHimself.
