We're all well aware of how we Bruin folk are always portrayed in a terribly negative light in the media...Well, thankfully...that's all about to change as an opportunity has arisen for us to turn the tables.

Leigh and Roxanne of Daybreak Productions will be filming and featured in a brand new, reality TV style documentary. Its basically an insider look at Coloured society as seen from the eyes of Coloured folk, where we go, what we do, where we hang out...that kinda thing.

school

Hillview High is a high school situated in Newlands East, Durban. This is a topic that is near and dear to me since this is the high school I attended as a little tot and have unbelievably fond memories. Both my parents also spent many years teaching at the school. The teachers were great, always giving of their time and the friends made are lasting a lifetime. I would really love to see comments from other ex-Hillview pupils and would love to see projects like this emanating from other schools.

Hillview Senior Secondary has been a name that has always been associated with high standards both academically and on the sports field. Since the opening of the school way back in 1986 the school has continually churned out young men and women, who have gone on to be leaders in the business and sporting community, both locally and internationally.

However, the current state of affairs at Hillview is not very pleasant based on my observations during a visit to the school in January. My impression was that the wheels were falling off. If it was not happening now, then it would definitely be the case in the not too distant future.

(What? You have'nt read the 1st installment of Ronald Dyers' on-point missives on the state of the bruin nation...Click HERE for part I)

Why I dislike (some) Coloured academics!!

Let me start off by saying that I certainly do not dislike ALL Coloured academics. When I say the word “dislike”, I'm not referring to the individual, but rather to some of their opinions and their utterances. Let me emphasise that some Coloured academics have done some amazing work in their fields and continue to be a shining example of what can come from dogged determination and hard work. You see, it's actually just a small cabal of these academics for whom I reserve my strongest dislike. The ones which raise my ire and which evoke my most base human emotions are the ones who insist on going down the dark, lonely path of “Coloured denialism”.

Day 8 – Wed, 2 Jan 2008, Marrakech (Morocco)

Got up not feeling too well but no weird dream to mention of or remember. Do feel like a cold coming on, though – feeling cold and nosed rather blocked. Oh btw the journal is behind big time. Updating now on Wed, 23 Jan 2008 and I have not been keeping any record of each day’s activities so I’m likely to miss a lot. Oh well, better than nothing so back to 2 Jan

Met the friendly stall owner on our way out. He again answered some questions we had, mainly about where to find a forex place and a super market as we figured we needed to get some food for the onward journey.

Found a bank with forex. Bit of a queue. Notably no security at all and I really mean nothing. You queue and when your turn comes we stand at a counter with a man behind it. No screen separating you at all despite large sums of money being handled. Decidedly refreshing. Continued on our way and bought some dodgy ray-ban sun glasses for DM40. Popped into an internet shop to do some admin things then headed for Gueliz (New Town).

Multi-talented Durban writer / actor / director / producer / singer Hamish Kyd has recently released his debut novel – Charlie – a poignant, colourful and uncompromising look at the tenacity and will to survive despite all odds.

Charlene D’Olivera (or “Charlie” as she becomes) is a beautiful, intelligent, outspoken young woman growing up in Newlands East in the 80s and her astonishing life-affirming story of hope – surviving a nightmare journey into the underbelly of gang-warfare, drug-lords, blackmail and prostitution.

This is a true story of a Coloured girl born to two white parents during apartheid in South Africa. (this phenomenon is known as a 'thowback', when outwardly "White" people refuse to acknowledge that their family tree has been "tainted" by sexual liaisons across the colour line have children which simply do not share the same phenotype as them...a right royal apartheid conundrum if u ask me...). 'SKIN' the movie shows the struggle this little Coloured girl faced growing up and finding love in a family and a community that was divided along racial grounds. [Read more for details]
