waiting

Day 5 – Sun, 30 Dec 2007, Malaga (Spain) to Algericas (Spain), Algericas to Tanger (Morocco), Tanger to Casablanca (Morocco)

The drive was 90 minutes as expected and we arrived 2 hours before sail time as we were instructed. “Checking in” took 10 minutes and we drove over to the point where we embark. We stopped at the police check point as there was nobody home. A gentleman did arrive a while later. Checked our passports and no problem. Still unsure if Rey really needed a Schengen visa but better safe than sorry. Next was he wait for our ferry. We ended up waiting almost 2 hours as it arrived late. Drove on board and headed up to the passenger area in search of a bar. Found it but they only had baby cans. Noticed a queue of people forming and then realised that we passport control was on the ferry. There were ladies standing around with forms in their hand that the passengers needed to fill in but not instructing passengers of this. Anyway we got forms completed them and joined the queue. There were these 2 French speaking ladies who were sitting on the chairs alongside the queue. We passed them and the queue moved and as we got close to our turn they came to stand almost alongside us.

 heading

Arnold and Rey's exciting adventures continue...here is day 3 and 4...

Day 3: Fri, 28 Dec 2007, Beziers (France) to Barcelona (Spain)

Only set off around 1000. Barcelona was not too far away, about 4 hours so we both unspokenly decided to have a wee sleep in. Motorway was close to our accommodation so we were quickly and easily on our way. Went through a couple more tolls ranging from a few €’s to another €19. We beginning to think that maybe public transport would have been a better option cause besides the tolls our car is guzzling diesel faster than I drink beer. Those who have had a couple elbows up with me know that I tend to push them back but, our car is proving to be in a class of its own. We keeping a record of distance travelled and litres of diesel at every stop and we roughly consuming 14 litres / 100km and it’s a diesel.

The February Fiesta attracted a fair crowd despite fears that many people in the forums had commented that they would not be able to attend. DJ Playa Daz and DJ Hugo kept the crowd jumping from beginning to end with tight beats. These 2 DJ’s had the crowd enthralled and will be at the next event as well on February 29th that proves to be even better and bigger.

departure

Finally, the first memoirs of the trip from London home. The guys are currently in Senegal at the moment, the last I heard and doing very well. They are on the road for just over a month now. Watch this space for daily updates. It's a lot of reading but definitely worth the read. Please post comments, words of encouragement etc. and we will pass it on to them. This is so exciting.

Day 1: Wed, 26 Dec 2007, London (England) to Fleury Megonis (France)

Set 2 alarms, one for 0640 and the 2nd for 0700. Typically I switched off the 1st and snoozed the 2nd till 0720 when I decided that it’s time to get up. As I expected I hardly slept. Equally as expected I underestimated the packing. Had packed for 3 days and was still packing at midnight of the previous night. There are just too many small things that are time consuming and while I have criticised others for hording I must admit that I’m a bit of a horder myself. The nerves kicked in round this time so I decided to relax with a couple of whiskeys and cigs. Oh, and finish off the umpteenth Carlsberg which along with Fosters, Rey and I had been drinking since Xmas Eve afternoon. The stuff was a complete waste. Only thing it did was fill me and then I’d empty it in the toilet. Around 0100 I was still jittery but decided it best to try go sleep.

(This article was sourced from IOL. Personally, it just makes my blood run cold that such blatant racism, prejudice and stereotyping still exists. We'd love to hear your comments about this - Ed)

A legal row over the sale of a Khayelitsha house has blown up into a racial war, with Khayelitsha residents stoning the home of a new "coloured" neighbour.

After a protracted legal battle, teacher Adrian Adams was due to move into the house on Monday, but residents welcomed him with a stream of abuse, saying he belonged in Mitchells Plain and alleging that coloured people would bring tik into the area.

Ownership of the house has been disputed for some time, with the previous owner, Nozibele Stamper, refusing to vacate the premises to make way for Adams.

Then on Tuesday night the animosity erupted into violence after a crowd of residents gathered outside the D-section house in support of Stamper.

(In this hard-hitting, no-holds-barred commentary on the state of bruin society, outspoken critic and social commentator, Ronald Dyers holds no punches in making his feelings clear...what do you think? - Ed)
