I have operated in the capacity of Partner and Marketing Director of Bruin-ou.com for the past year and to date this is the first article that I have had the opportunity to write and the first opportunity I have had to share an experience that has reminded me about why it is exactly that Bruin-ou.com exists. The need to make a positive impact on our Coloured community was the main driver in my decision to take up the challenge of developing Bruin-ou.com as a brand and to increase the number of people it reached. In an effort to realize this vision, Bruin-ou.com has embarked on what we would term for want of a better word as a schools outreach program. We visited the learners at Coronation High School on Spring Day after prior arrangement with the principal and had a treat in store for them.
Together with the DJ’s from Hard Knock and the Dancers from Hip-hop Connexion we had a time to remember and put on a show of a lifetime for the kids. We supplied the school with J's, dancers and sound and turned what was gooing to be a fairly mediocre Spring Day into one that they would never forget. Bruin-ou.com developed a platform for students to showcase their dance talents. Over 30 students entered and not only did each one of the students receive prizes from Bruin-ou.com and Hip-hop connexion but the winners of the competition would put themselves in line to win a trip to the USA. Using an entertainment platform to reach and encourage these students that have been marginalized by the education department and left exposed to the ills of poverty, proved to be the ideal canvas to paint a new picture of hope for these kids. It made them realize that they are not forgotten, that they are valued and that the notion that they can overcome adversity and achieve their dreams was a reality if they started to believe that they are worth more than they have been shown. |
