Other notable experiences were a trip to Brick Lane in Whitechapel where you will find the most mouth-watering, yet bum-burning Indian dishes (can you use bum and mouth in the same sentence) ever. Firstly, as soon as you get off at the Aldgate East station about a kilometre or so away from the actual street, you can already smell the curry. As you enter Brick Lane you are immediately harassed (worse than Grey Street in Durban). They stop just short of kidnapping you in an attempt to get you to eat at their restaurant. You have to play it cool, (as I was told, and later learned) and act like you are just walking through. Feel out the prices, then come back for the best offer. You will be tempted to succumb early though, as there are some incredible offers ranging from 10% to 25% off your final bill. We eventually settled on the Curry Bazaar, who offered us 25% off the final bill. But the part that won us over was the fact that we were allowed to bring in our own drinks. Imagine that! It felt like Xanadu without the loud music and stabbing. There we were, drinking quarts inside a restaurant and they were kind enough to keep them chilled in their fridge for us. A ‘raising of the arm’ was all it took to get a refill. Now that’s what I call fine dining!

Another enjoyable event was a SA club onboard a boat on the Thames. I think it would be fair to say that I had consumed more than just a fair amount of alcohol, so the recollection of events from that evening is not too clear. I do remember though that it was really great and there were many South Africans, many of whom I knew and hadn’t seen in a really long time. The boat had 3 levels each playing their own type of music. It’s amazing that we travel so far to stick to our own. The kwaito was happening on the one level and there were 99% Blacks on that floor. On the lower level there was Hip-hop and RNB and that’s where all the Bruin-ous were. The top level was just for cooling off and smoking weed (a costly activity if you’re from SA – we’re spoilt in the weed department, not that I smoke it.)
