There was also a soccer game in the park at Clapham Common. I was really impressed by the camaraderie and the friendship that South Africans living in London have formed. They are a really close-knit group. I guess that’s the sort of thing you need to do when you are away from home to make living abroad more enjoyable and to basically keep sane. Apparently, they frequently meet for an afternoon of soccer in the park. Jislaaik, we played for like two hours straight, and that was just first half! The game could not kick off until each man had his cold beer firmly clasped in his hand and took a slow, cautious jog around the field. Anything more than that could have resulted in spillage - and you don’t want that to happen when you’re buying beer in pounds.
After the game more beers were bought and what had been an empty trash bin in the park ended up the envy of all trash bins, overflowing with empty beer cans. Our next stop was a pub in the area but I couldn’t handle the pace and made an early exit. The gang walked down the street in droves, something you would never see in SA without someone ending up in jail. Quite a sight: a gang of Bruin-ou’s parading with full beer cans plus extra stock in the packet, without police sirens in close pursuit and without anyone giving a second look. Drinking in public is not a crime in the UK (God bless them) and our law enforcers need to take a page from that book and learn that there are more serious things to worry about than arresting a man for drinking.
At the end of my trip, I look back and realize what a really good time I had and how lucky I was that there are people in London I could visit. I would encourage young people to go to the UK for a while and get to travel. I say this though as somebody who has never lived overseas so I wouldn’t really be qualified to comment on everyday life. However, we will no doubt have articles published by people who have actually lived, and are still living abroad, who share their experiences and invaluable advice. The guys there really get a chance to see the world and I am glad that most of them have taken the opportunity with both hands. So keep a look out for their stories on the website.
After London, I visited the US (New York and Boston) for a few days and I will share that story with you in a little bit. ...
